Fire Door Safety Week 2026

A fire door defect has been reported. What happens next?

Fire Door Safety Week (21-25 September 2026) is a useful prompt to look beyond spotting defects. Once someone reports a concern, the building team needs a clear route to assess it, manage any immediate risk, arrange suitable work and confirm the outcome. A reported issue should remain traceable until it is resolved.

5minute guideReviewed for an England-based audience
01

Record the report and identify the door

Log the location, door reference, nature of the concern and date reported. Photographs can help, but they should be linked to the correct asset. Give residents and building users a clear way to report concerns, and make sure reports reach the person responsible for arranging action.

  • Record the door and exact location
  • Keep the original report and photographs
  • Assign an owner and record the next action
02

Assess the issue and any immediate risk

A competent person should determine what has failed, the likely effect on the complete doorset and whether temporary measures are needed while a permanent solution is arranged. Urgency depends on the defect, location, building use and fire strategy. A visual report alone may not establish the door's specification or whether a proposed repair is permissible.

  • Check the complete doorset and available records
  • Prioritise the issue in the context of the building
  • Record access failures and any interim arrangements
03

Decide whether to repair or replace

The repair route should be supported by the doorset's evidence, compatible components and the scope allowed by the manufacturer or relevant certification. Where the construction or fire performance cannot be established, further investigation may be needed. Some defects can be repaired; others call for replacement of a component or the complete doorset. Do not assume a cosmetic fix restores fire performance.

  • Confirm the intended fire and smoke performance
  • Check manufacturer and tested-system information
  • Explain the repair or replacement decision
04

Complete the work and verify the result

Install the specified components or doorset with competent workmanship and appropriate quality checks. The final check should address the original defect and confirm that the door operates as intended, including closing and latching where applicable. Any unresolved issue should remain on the action schedule.

  • Use the specified compatible materials and components
  • Check operation after the work
  • Record variations or outstanding items
05

Close the action with evidence

A useful close-out record connects the original report, assessment, work order and completion evidence to the same door. Keep relevant before-and-after photographs, product details, dates and inspection or installation records. This helps building teams demonstrate what was done and plan future maintenance.

  • Link completion to the original door reference
  • Retain photographs and product information
  • Update the door register and maintenance programme
