Passive fire protection at Booth House, Whitechapel
A £500,000+ passive fire protection programme delivered over six months in controlled phases throughout an occupied Whitechapel hostel housing more than 200 residents. FireX coordinated intrusive surveying, fire stopping, fire damper servicing, rated ceilings, access panels and fire door works while maintaining safe occupation.

Project requirement
The challenge.
Following an extensive compartmentation survey, NACCS consulted a number of passive fire protection contractors about the remedial programme at Booth House. FireX was appointed on the strength of its proposed methodology, level of detail and phased delivery strategy. The hostel remained occupied by more than 200 residents throughout the works, so every phase had to maintain safe access, protect residents and staff, and preserve the building’s continued operation while extensive opening-up and remedial works progressed.

How the work was managed.
FireX developed a construction phase plan and delivered the project over six months from June 2025, working in controlled phases from the basement through six storeys and the plant room. The programme included an intrusive compartmentation survey, the removal of non-compliant fire-stopping foam and the installation of complete FSi fire-stopping systems to the project fire strategy. FireX also inspected and serviced 92 fire dampers, replacing fused links where required; removed and replaced more than 1,000 m² of ceilings with 60-minute fire-rated systems; installed more than 250 fire-rated access panels; installed over 40 FD30S doorsets; and repaired and maintained 52 existing fire doors. Electrical and fire-alarm subcontractors were managed alongside the passive fire works, with building management, security and other stakeholders involved throughout.
